How to find SBIR grants

A plain-English workflow for finding SBIR/STTR opportunities without living inside government portals.

Last verified by NonDilute: 2026-04-29. Official notices and agency instructions control.

The short version

  1. Start with your technical domain, not the word "grant."
  2. Check the agency most likely to own the mission: NASA for space, DoD for dual-use, NSF for broad deep tech, NIH for life sciences, DOE for energy and hard science.
  3. Read the official notice, then the agency-specific instructions.
  4. Look for hidden gates: Project Pitch, DSIP registration, LOI, eRA Commons, SAM.gov, UEI, or appendix-specific limits.
  5. Save the deadline and set reminders before deciding whether to apply.

NonDilute does the discovery pass for you, but it does not replace the official instructions.
