What this is

This NIH program targets exceptional postdoctoral researchers seeking to establish independent research careers. The K99/R00 provides a two-phase structure: an initial mentored phase (K99) followed by an independent research phase (R00) once the awardee secures a tenure-track or equivalent faculty position. Applicants must hold a research or clinical doctorate and be positioned to transition from postdoctoral status to faculty within the award period. This is not a startup or small-business funding mechanism—it is explicitly for researchers embedded in academic or research institutions making the leap to independence.

Who can apply

Applicants must be postdoctoral researchers (or equivalent) holding a research or clinical doctorate, positioned to transition to a tenure-track or equivalent independent faculty position. Eligible organizations include academic institutions, nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status, state and public universities, and some government entities—not designed for solo founders, startups, or for-profit businesses.
