What this is

This NIH program targets postdoctoral researchers ready to launch independent research careers. It provides a structured transition: an initial K99 phase with mentoring support, followed by an R00 phase of independent research funding once the applicant secures a tenure-track or equivalent faculty position. The program spans multiple NIH institutes and centers (28 funding mechanisms listed) and covers broad biomedical and behavioral research domains. Clinical trials are explicitly not allowed. This is ideal for early-career researchers seeking stability and federal backing to establish themselves as independent investigators.

Who can apply

Applicants must hold a research or clinical doctorate (PhD, MD, DDS, DVM, etc.) and be in or transitioning from a postdoctoral position. Eligible organizations include universities (public and private), nonprofits, small businesses, state/local governments, and tribal entities. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency typically required for NIH funding.
